Influenza causing orthomyxviruses infect especially mammals (e.g. humans, pigs) and birds. Influenza A viruses are divided based on surface glycoprotein hemaglutin (H, 16 subtypes) and neuraminidase (N, 9 subtypes). For example Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 was the case of Spanis flu in 1918 and swine flu in 2009; subtype H5N1 is the cause of avian flu. orthomyxoviruses are capable of fast mutations.
